Oceanic Tales Reef Suit Mens S
Oceanic Tales is a Whitsundays founded marine safety brand built from lived experience and strengthened through education, training and hands on community involvement.
Founders Mel and Josh met in the Whitsundays and have proudly called the region home since 2009. Married & are together they are raising their two boys, Reef and Jett, who were born and raised in the Whitsundays and are now 13 and 11 years old.
As a family, we have always loved everything the Whitsundays has to offer. From boating and beach days to camping, fishing, snorkelling and outdoor adventures, life on and around the water has always been a huge part of who we are.
It began as a small family business and it still is... But the mission has grown far beyond our own family.
Our story started on an ordinary Friday afternoon at Boathaven Beach in Airlie Beach, outside what many people consider "stinger season." It was September School Holidays, Our son Reef was 12 years old, playing in the shallows, when he suddenly felt what he thought was a crab nip at his ankle. Within moments, he was in significant pain and blister-like welts appeared almost instantly.
We hadn't packed vinegar.
We assumed the risk was seasonal.
We were unprepared.
The ambulance arrived quickly and Reef was transported for medical assessment. During treatment, his heart rate became erratic, requiring several hours of monitoring before doctors were comfortable discharging him later that evening.
While the outcome was positive, the experience exposed a reality many families, boat owners and visitors underestimate. Certain marine stings, including suspected Irukandji syndrome, can trigger significant symptoms throughout the body, including severe pain, elevated blood pressure and changes in heart rate, which is why medical assessment and monitoring are often recommended.
Marine sting risk in tropical waters is not confined to a few calendar months. That day changed our understanding of preparedness.
Oceanic Tales First Response Marine Kits were developed to support immediate action in the event of a suspected marine sting while professional medical care is accessed. Each kit is thoughtfully assembled with high quality Australian made products and practical first response essentials designed for real world marine environments.
Our commitment extends beyond the products we create. Over the past year, we have actively supported marine safety education throughout the Whitsundays by:
• Volunteering alongside Royal Life Saving Queensland during Junior Lifeguard programs
• Supporting ongoing water safety education initiatives
• Speaking at school assemblies to raise marine stinger awareness
• Presenting to local boating, fishing and community groups
• Attending community events to share practical marine safety knowledge
• Designing educational resources for families and schools
• Maintaining current first aid training to ensure the information we share remains responsible, relevant and up to date
This is not a short term campaign.
It is an ongoing commitment grounded in education, responsibility and lived experience.
Operating throughout the Whitsundays and the broader Great Barrier Reef region, we believe marine preparedness should be second nature for families, boat owners, liveaboards, charter operators and coastal travellers alike.
Oceanic Tales exists to help bridge the gap between awareness and action, encouraging safer habits around the water through preparation, education and practical first response readiness.
Created from experience.
Driven by purpose.
Committed to preparedness.
