Cooler weather forces change in tactics
As the mercury begins to slowly drop week by week, there are plenty of other signs indicating that winter is on the way. It’s probably one of the best times of year for 4lb fishing as species such as trevally, queenfish, grunter and bream really come into their own. The water begins to cool and becomes crystal clear, which can turn on the best form of fishing…sight casting.
In recent weeks the notorious April prawn run began with good size prawns smothering the deeper water, and jelly prawns lining Townsville’s coastline. When this occurs it brings numerous species that all come in for the feast of a lifetime. The predators are soo heavily fixated on the jelly prawns getting a bite out of them is another story. But as previously mentioned, matching the hatch is crucial if you are to fool one of these fish. The rockpool saw schools of big g
olden trevally up to a metre in length mooching tail up around the rocks, with precision casts sent ahead of the school getting all the attention. Small soft plastics and Koolabung blades worked effectively enough to distract the fish from the jelly prawns. Then it was just a matter of hanging on! Watching 30m of line peel off the spool during the first run was not uncommon.
From now until December should see the Koolabung blade dominate most 4lb rod and reels. It’s a proven winter time slayer for trevally’s not to mention metre plus barra. Remember matching the hatch is the key, and big fish will eat small lures!
Stay tuned for the next report from the 4lb club, and if you have any questions on how to get started come in and see us we will be happy to help out!
Also if you have caught any fish on 4lb we would love to see them! Just email us the photo and we will post it on the 4lb photo wall.
